what is sublimation

Sublimation printing is a digital printing process that allows full-colour, high-quality designs to be permanently transferred onto specially coated surfaces. The process works by using heat and pressure to turn solid dye into a gas without passing through a liquid stage. This gaseous dye then bonds with polyester-based materials, embedding the design directly into the surface rather than sitting on top of it. This results in a smooth, durable finish that won’t crack, peel, or fade over time. Sublimation is an ideal choice for creating vibrant, photographic-quality prints on a variety of products, including mugs, sportswear, and promotional items.

Small run sublimation

There are different types of sublimation printing, and it’s important to understand the distinctions. Full kit sublimation, which is commonly used for high-end custom sportswear, involves printing the entire garment before it is sewn together, allowing for all-over designs. However, we specialise in smaller-scale sublimation printing, such as custom mugs, sports t-shirts, and personalised gifts. This method is perfect for short-run production, where full kit sublimation isn’t required. It offers a more affordable and flexible solution for individuals and businesses looking to create unique, branded products without the need for bulk orders.

The benefits of sublimation

One of the biggest advantages of sublimation printing is its low minimum order quantity, making it an excellent choice for small businesses, one-off custom items, and personalised gifts. Unlike traditional screen printing, which often requires large print runs to be cost-effective, sublimation allows for high-quality prints on demand. Additionally, because the ink becomes part of the material rather than sitting on top of it, sublimated prints are incredibly durable, resistant to washing, and will not fade over time. The process also allows for full-colour printing, meaning that even complex, photographic images can be reproduced with stunning clarity.

What can be printed

Sublimation printing is incredibly versatile and can be applied to a wide range of products, provided they have a polyester coating or a high polyester content. Some of the most popular sublimation products include ceramic mugs, coasters, phone cases, polyester t-shirts, and tote bags. This method is also widely used for personalised home décor items, such as cushion covers and photo panels. Thanks to the adaptability of sublimation, businesses can create custom, high-quality merchandise that caters to a variety of markets, from promotional branding to personalised gifts.

limitations of sublimation

While sublimation offers many benefits, it does have some limitations. The most significant is that it only works on light-coloured, polyester-based materials. Unlike other printing methods, sublimation cannot be used on 100% cotton fabrics or dark garments, as the ink relies on a polyester surface to bond effectively. Additionally, while the quality of the prints is excellent, the process is not suitable for textured surfaces, as the design needs a smooth area to transfer correctly. Finally, while sublimation allows for stunning full-colour prints, it is not always cost-effective for very large bulk orders, where traditional screen printing might be a better option. However, for small runs and personalised products, sublimation remains an excellent choice.
